Starting Points - Lesson 1

THE GOSPEL

The ‘gospel’ is the good news that through Christ the power of God’s kingdom has entered history to renew the whole world. When we believe and rely on Jesus’ Person and work (rather than ours) for our relationship to God, that kingdom power comes upon us and begins to work through us.

You will find the audio portions in the Starting Points folder in the audio player. (You will find the player in the upper right corner about the “Links”, where it says “open public audio”.) You will want to play “Who is this Jesus?” which is a lesson taught by Tim Keller. We would like to thank Redeemer Presbyterian Church for making these lessons available.

A set of notes called “How Can I Know God?” is provided for this first lesson and can be opened in a pdf file by clicking on the link below.

Please leave a comment when you have finished the lesson. E-mail Murray, if you have any questions.

It was so refreshing to be reminded how there is no other Savior like Jesus Christ. To see how Tim so clearly and systematically broke down the major differences between two of the greatest “religious icons” ever was so truthful and encouraging.

It is just like a man to be like, “Ah, if you do this and do that, and don’t do that, but do this, I think we can work something out.”, it sounds so much like getting credit in some form or fashion.

It is remarkable in so many senses that Jesus came to us to show us that we really have no chance in earning a spot in Heaven. I am so thankful that we now have a Mediator with the one and only God, and that we no longer rely on the sprinkling of the blood of goats and bulls, but rely on the blood that was shed on the Cross. And by trusting in Christ, we have to give up the former old man, and behold, become a new creation.

    God is so good.

This was a really great summary I think! It reminded me of a few things and made me think about some new ones. I was particularly struck by the image of God being like both judge and father of a guilty man in court. “The opposite of love is not anger, but indifference.”

I also really like “Faith is transferring your trust from your own efforts to the efforts of Christ…All you need is nothing.” It’s a good thing, because that’s all I have!

I think I might ask my unbelieving family members to read this - the “What if I’m not Ready to Proceed” at the end is a great idea. Thank you!

    Hey, Allie!
Glad you found the notes helpful. Did you get a chance to hear the audio message, “Who is this Jesus”? It is designed to help begin answering some of the questions people often have regarding Christianity.
